Sustainability for Agriculture : Enabled on the cloud

The last couple of decades have seen unprecedented growth in the technology sector which has led to several industry verticals benefiting from these technological innovations helping them drive digital transformation, however sustainability has been a challenge. The growth in cloud computing has shown significant impact in sectors like Finance, Healthcare, Life Sciences, Semiconductor and Manufacturing. Similar returns have been lagging in the agriculture sector. There are several reasons why this sector has been lagging in digital transformation and cloud adoption, hence it is important that these reasons be analyzed if the true benefits of digital transformation must be reaped. The need for this transformation is acute for both emerging and developed markets. The transformation has to be enabled using sustainable means and leveraging technologies that will ensure that sustainability is achieved in this journey.The first section of the book consists of five chapters where we explore the trends in modern agriculture that are being adopted across the globe and their potential for developing economies ensuring sustainable development. This century has seen the application of new technology changes to several key verticals that has fundamentally changed the way business and markets run in these verticals. We will look at the relevant cloud technologies of this century that have revolutionized industrial sectors and how they have the potential to do the same for Agriculture. In the next section that comprises of the next three chapters 6-8, we take the use case of Indian agriculture to model a typical developing nation struggling with digital transformation of its agriculture sector. In the last section of the book, comprising of the last three chapters 9-11, we highlight the lessons learnt from this use case and how they can be applied towards modern day challenges in agriculture practices in developed markets. We highlight how strategic investments need to be made in technology along with a clearly defined support plan from economic policies and political establishments.
